Cutlass-wielding man shot by supermarket guard over face mask requirement

A Parika resident is currently a patient at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) nursing a gunshot wound to his leg after being shot by a security guard

It is alleged that the victim, who was armed with a cutlass, was involved in an argument with a supermarket guard over wearing a facemask when he was shot.

According to police, on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 2:25 pm, the victim, 57-year-old Mohamed Fazil, of Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo got into an argument with the Golden World Chinese Supermarket security guard regarding the requirement of wearing a face mask before entering the supermarket.

After the argument Fazil left the establishment but later returned with a cutlass, brandishing it. The 57-year-old security guard told police that upon seeing Fazil with the weapon, he pulled out the company-issued handgun from his waist and fired a shot to the mid-section of the victim’s leg.

The victim was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was treated and admitted. He was later transferred to the WDRH where his condition is listed as stable.

The security guard was arrested and taken to the Parika Police Station.

Investigations are ongoing.
