The operators of a bar and lounge at Melanie Damishana on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) were on Thursday charged with breaching the national COVID-19 curfew by operating the bar beyond 10 pm.

Attorney-at-law and PNCR member, James Bond along with Krishnan Ross, were brought before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court where they denied the charge and were released on self-bail.

It is alleged that during March, 2021, the two men breached four of the restrictions on social activities, including breach of the national curfew by operating the Cigars and Cognac bar and lounge located at Melanie Damishana.

Following their not-guilty plea, they were told to return to the court on December 17, when the trial is expected to commence.

Bond and Ross are now among several bar owners who have been charged with breaching the COVID-19 curfew and measures. The Guyana Police Force (GPF) along with the Task Force, have been conducting nightly patrols at bars in George-town and have arrested several persons for both attending functions that are prohibited under the COVID-19 regulations and/or for breaching the 10:30 pm curfew. Accord-ing to a GPF release, ranks from the Task Force conducted an operation in Region 4(a) and persons were detained after allegedly breaching several of the national COVID-19 measures.
