Driver charged with killing Eccles teen

A driver was on Monday set $1 million bail after he was charged with causing the death of a teen, who was hit down on Saturday night along the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Delroy Mitchell, 36, of Nismes, West Bank Deme-rara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Golden Grove\ Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with causing the death of Aurelio Crighton by dangerous driving.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail. The case was adjourned to September 29, 2021.

The police reported that Crighton, 18 of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was hit down while crossing the road on September 4, in the vicinity of Bagotstown.

The report said Mitchell, who at the time of the accident was driving a Toyota Corolla NZE with registration number HD 2455, struck Crighton as he headed east from the western end of a pedestrian crossing.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he died while receiving medical attention.
