The driver accused of causing last Tuesday’s Peters Hall, East Bank Public Road accident, which left police sergeant Rajendra Major in a critical condition, was charged with several offences last Friday.

The accused, Abdool Safraz Nazir, 36, of Eccles, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with failing to stop after an accident, failing to render assistance and driving under the influence. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was placed on $20,000 bail for each charge. He is scheduled to return to court on August 16, 2021.

Meanwhile, acting Commander of Region 4 (b) Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine told Stabroek News the police are still assessing Major’s condition.

Major, 41, of Cummings Park, Sophia, was hospitalized following the accident and remains in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to a police report, the accident involved a Guyana Police Force motorcycle CL 477, which was ridden by Major, a car registered as PSS 3327, owned and driven by Nazir, a jeep-registered as PHH 9446 owned by Jamal Pedro of West Ruimveldt and driven by 39-year-old Michael Oie.

Enquiries revealed that about 11:20pm, Major was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the western carriageway at Peters Hall along the East Bank Public Road. Upon approaching the intersection at the Demerara Harbour Bridge Access Road and the East Bank Public Road, Nazir, who was behind Major and allegedly proceeding at a fast rate, collided with him. The collision caused Major to end up on the windscreen of the car before he was flung into the air and then onto the road in front of the car in question, which then ran over the policeman before continuing north on the eastern drive lane of the western carriageway of the East Bank Public Road.

The suspect, in his apparent bid to escape, then collided with the jeep, causing it to turn turtle before it end up in a trench situated on the western side of the road at Bagotstown. The suspect continued further north along the road but lost control of his vehicle, resulting in him ending up in a drain situated on the western side of the road at Eccles in the vicinity of Kenrick Auto Sales.

Major was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted with head injuries. The occupants of the jeep were taken to the Diamond Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the car was apprehended and placed in custody.
