The 2021 FIDE Online Olympiad has reached the playoff division stage with the top chess teams of the world qualifying for the quarter final stage of the tournament, which concludes September 15. One hundred and fifty-three countries entered the 2021 Olympiad.

India and Russia were co-winners in last year’s Online Olympiad and both teams appear headed for the final countdown, though this could change. India is led by past world champion Viswanathan Anand and Russia by Alexander Grischuk.

China and the USA also appeared to be strong contenders for the gold medal, but Kazakhstan defeated China in a surprising twist. China is led by Ding Liren, a top ten player on the FIDE rating list, and Hou Yifan, one of the strongest women players world-wide. The USA’s top board is Jeffrey Xiong.
