Corentyne woman succumbs to burn injuries

Sandrama Roma Raju, the Corentyne woman who was allegedly burnt by her husband during the wee hours of last Monday morning, succumbed to her injuries at the New Amsterdam Public Hospi-tal last evening.

Her father, Subramanie Raju, 60, of Number One Public Road, Corentyne, confirmed to Sunday Stabroek that the family was informed of the woman’s death just around 7.30 pm by the hospital.

The emotional man related that his daughter’s condition worsened yesterday afternoon. “She been stop talk and so… She tell me to pray and look after [her daughter],” he said.

As of last evening, Raju had officially identified his daughter’s body and it was placed in the hospital’s mortuary.

The woman’s husband, Ganeshwar Sheocharran, 26, of Lot 16 Port Mou-rant, Corentyne, who had fled to the United States, where he was detained and then placed on a return flight, is currently on remand after he was charged with attempted murder on Friday. With the woman’s death, he is expected to be faced with a new charge this week.

The couple had been together for six years and shared a four-year-old daughter.

Raju’s father had previously explained to this publication that he was told that his daughter and her husband were engaged in a heated argument that started just around 9 pm last Sunday and that she had threatened to leave Sheocharran. After the man would not allow her to leave, she allegedly doused herself with kerosene oil and he allegedly set her on fire.

Following the incident, Sheocharran fled the scene and went into hiding after which he made attempts to flee to New York, where his parents reside. Last Tuesday evening, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) received information that the man was on board a flight to New York, causing them to immediately reach out to the immigration authorities at JFK Airport.

The GPF also issued a wanted bulletin on Tues-day evening for the man, which resulted in the  immigration authorities at JFK detaining Sheocharran and placing him on a flight back to Guyana, where he was immediately arrested upon his return.
