The recently formed East Bank Berbice Sports Club is issuing a public call for assistance with sporting gear.

The club, that was formed August 29, according to it’s president William Farley, is based at the Edinburgh Ground.

It is currently catering to over 50 members from all sporting disciplines and will no doubt grow larger.

“We are focused on youth and community development through sports. I know there are cricket and football clubs here but we are looking at the other sports, you know, like boxing, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, athletics and so,” Farley told this publication during an interview yesterday.

The club’s president indicated that they have already reached out to president of the  Athletics Association of Guyana, Aubrey Hutson, in order to register their athletes.

Farley confessed that the club is strong on its mantra of empowering women and it is evident in that six of the seven executives are females.

Along with Farley, the executive consists of Debra Warde (first vice-president), Veera Latiff (second vice-president), Oshelle Welch (secretary), Tameda August (assistant secretary), Deyon Taylor (treasurer) and Christina Seepersaud (assistant treasurer).

With the club’s birth just over a month ago, Farley indicated that a lot of the expenses are on the few persons taking up the mantle and is calling for corporate Guyana and the Government of Guyana to extend a helping hand with gear and other necessities.

“One of the major challenges we face is the lack of gear. We would be really grateful if we could get some help even if it’s a pair of boxing gloves, balls, rackets, shoes, anything at least is a start,” he stated.

Farley pointed out that it is noticeable that clubs around the country including Region Six, have been getting assistance from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and has written to them seeking help.  The club has also written to the Office of the First Lady.

He highlighted that it would be a great service to the community if there could be the installation of lights so that persons can train and exercise at nights.

According to Farley, a private citizen has taken it upon himself to assist with ploughing the ground and training has already started in the areas of boxing and athletics.

Persons who are desirous of making a contribution towards the development of the club could contact the executive body via email at eastbankberbicesportsclub@yahoo.com or contact 697-5310 via call or WhatsApp.
