Body of Parika Backdam pensioner found in drain

The partly decomposed body of a 65-year-old man was on Tuesday discovered in a drain at Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo. The now dead man was last seen several days ago in a drunken state heading into the backdam.

The deceased has been identified as Mahadeo (only name given), a pensioner who lived at Parika Backdam.

On Tuesday about 2:30 pm, the police received a call informing them of a body that was found lying motionless in the drain.

The area was subsequently visited by a party of policemen who with the help of residents removed the partly decomposed body.

The man’s body was checked for marks of violence but none was observed.

A cousin of Mahadeo, a 51-year-old man who had identified the body and resides in the area, told police that the last time he saw the deceased was last Thursday on October 7. At the time, he recalled, Mahadeo was drunk and was walking along the Parika Backdam Access Road.

His body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
