Region Two’s Regional Health Officer (RHO), Dr. Ranjeev Singh, recently disclosed that schoolchildren were amongst the one hundred persons who were vaccinated against the coronavirus in the community of Wakapoa (Pomeroon-Supenaam) which had seen a spike in cases.

Food hampers were also distributed to those families who are currently in home isolation. Dr. Singh said that the vaccination team will be returning to the community. Another team had recently visited the community and several sanitation products were taken to the Wakapoa community. Wakapoa is among several new Covid-19 hotspots in Guyana with approximately 59 infected persons, 39 persons asymptomatic and one patient critical. This figure was revealed by Dr. Frank Anthony during his COVID-19 update last Monday. A team from the Regional Health Services and the Regional Rapid Response Team headed by the RHO was dispatched to the community where discussions were held with community health workers and members of the Wakapoa Village Council. Dr. Singh said that as soon as the Covid patients have recovered a vaccination team will visit the area to ensure that persons are immunized.

Dr. Singh also disclosed that testing for the Covid-19 virus will be increased in the village. The visiting team handed over 100 testing kits (PCR) and personal protective equipment to the Community Health Worker (CHW) to increase testing in the community. The areas currently affected are Myrie and Curimero.

Toshao Lloyd Perreira said that his council is currently distributing the sanitation products and check-ups are conducted through frequent calls made to those families that are currently in home isolation. Presently the village council has instituted several measures including the closure of all sporting activities and churches and reducing the village boat system from Monday to Friday only. These measures were taken by the Village Council in conjunction with the Regional Task Force to assist in the reduction of new infections. To date, 59% of the Wakapoa adult population is fully immunized. Fifteen families who are currently in home isolation were given food hampers, and an additional 5 cases of hand sanitizers, 12 cases of bleach, and 2000 face masks were handed over to Perreira.
