Lenox Shuman, Member of Parliament representing the joinder list said that he met with Leader of the Oppo-sition, Joseph Harmon yesterday on a number of matters including making the opposition more effective.

In a post on his Face-book page, Shuman, who is the Deputy Speaker of Parliament said that the two also discussed  “holding the government accountable”.

Shuman, head of the Liberty and Justice Party,  currently holds the one seat won by the list joinder which also includes A New and United Guyana and The New Movement.

Shuman said that he and Harmon also discussed the stalemate in confirming the Chief Justice and Chancel-lor of the Judiciary in their current posts. Substantive confirmation requires the President and the Opposition Leader to agree. President Irfaan Ali has said that there will be no meeting with Harmon until he recognises the PPP/C government.

Shuman said  he also made an appeal for financial support for one research assistant and  Harmon agreed to cover the cost for one such person in consideration of his party’s support for an Indigenous Parliamentarian.

“I had previously written to the Clerk of the National Assembly requesting same in order to strengthen our representation and the letter was referred to Hon. Gail Teixeira (Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance). We await the response”, Shuman said.

He added that Harmon was cordial, receptive and open to discussing issues. Shuman said that Harmon also indicated that he is open to the consultation with President Ali on moving forward the substantive appointments in the judiciary.
