A cameo with the bat followed up with an inspiring bowling effort from national all-rounder, Christopher Barnwell led Asia United to the Nation’s Capital T20 title after beating Samp Army by 53 runs Sunday.

In the final, Asia United posted 185 for five from their full quota after winning the toss and batting. In reply, Samp Army could only manage 133 for nine by the time their overs ended.

Asia’s innings was led by former India under-19s, Smit Patel who top scored with 72 from 48 balls. The 28-year-old right-hander, who played for the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League earlier this year, struck seven fours and three sixes.

Patel added 50 for the third wicket with Milind Kumar who smashed three sixes in his 23-ball 32 before he shared in a 58-run stand with Barnwell for the fourth wicket. Barnwell also struck three sixes and raced to 26 from 16 balls.

Barnwell’s countrymen, Jonathan Foo and Bhaskar Yadram chipped in with cameos of 23 not out and 19 not out respectively.

Former Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Saurabh Netravalker was the pick of the Samp Army bowlers, returning 4-23.

In the chase, Elmore Hutchinson top scored with 24 from 19 balls while Chandrapaul Hemraj made 23 from 20 balls, laced with two sixes. Barnwell returned with his seam bowling to pick up 3-32 while Yadram supported with 2-25. Ali Khan (2-18) and Kyle Philip (1-11) were also among the wickets.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Samp Army defeated Stallions by 11 runs while Asia United brushed aside 22 Yards by nine wickets.

Throughout the tournament, Guyanese cricketers enjoyed a fair amount of success with Sherfane Rutherford earning the most points.

The right-arm seamer was the tournament’s leading wicket taker with 11 while also scoring 99 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 206.

Trevon Griffith chalked up the most runs by a Guyanese with 137 at a strike rate of 180. He was closely trailed by Tagenarine Chanderpaul who made 116 in three innings at a strike of 161. Hemraj was the only other Guyanese with over 100 runs (113) with a strike rate of 188.
