The Board of Industrial Training (BIT) has commenced its first heavy-duty equipment operator programme in Mabaruma, Region One, according to a Ministry of Labour press release.

An initial batch of seventeen participants will be introduced to  four months of practical and theoretical training. The first batch of trainees include two females and two police officers.

Joseph Hamilton, Minister of Labour, stated, “We are committed to ensuring that you get all the requisite skills in your community wherever you live. No place is too far with regards to training our citizens. That is why the first thing we did is to appoint a BIT officer here. In fact, in every region, there are BIT officers to sit with village councils and community leaders to develop training programmes.”

He praised the women for their participation and encouraged them to break the societal norms of career type.

The minister said that as Guyana continues to advance, foreign workers are being employed because they are the ones fully equipped with the skills for a specific task. However, he assured that the moment Guyanese are equipped with these skills they will also be employed.
