A labourer was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment after he admitted to chopping his neighbour with a cutlass.

Royen Singh, of Lot 37 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court when he confessed. He admitted that on October 29, Lot 37 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, George-town, he unlawfully and maliciously, inflicted bodily harm on Chris Balkarran.

“I did it,” Singh told the Chief Magistrate immediately after the charge was read to him. He further said that it was self-defence. In his explanation, the man said that he doesn’t trouble people because he tried to avoid situations that lead to conflict and problems. The man said that he chopped Balkarran but did not tell the court more as to the reason. Singh was sentenced to three years behind bars.

Balkarran was present at the court and he showed the court his casts and further informed about his injuries. He said that he was also chopped to his shoulders and that he has to return to the hospital. He said that he suffered four broken fingers on the right hand. He also said that the chops were severe on his left hand and the nerves in two of his fingers were damaged.
