Truck driver in fatal Caledonia crash was trying to avoid hitting other vehicle – police

The truck driver who collided with a couple along the Caledonia Public Road, East Bank Demerara on Thursday, was trying to avoid hitting another vehicle.

Lloyd Valcin, 42, and Onica Valcin, 31, of Wisroc, Linden, both succumbed after the accident, while another person, Shaquel Williams, 20, of Blue Berry Hill Squatting Area, Linden, who was a passenger in their vehicle, was injured.

The accident occurred around 14:45 hrs.

The Guyana Police Force yesterday said that the truck, owned and driven by Carl Craig, was proceeding north along the western side of Caledonia Public Road while the car with the couple and Williams was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road.

As both vehicles were approaching a landfill site situated on the western side off the road, the police said, an unknown truck attempted to reverse from east to west on the road into the landfill site. As a result, Craig swerved in a north easterly direction to pass the reversing truck. As a result, he ended up in the path of the Valcins’ car and they collided head on.

The police said the Valcins and Williams received injuries to their heads and about their bodies. They were all unconscious when they were removed from the car by the police and public-spirited citizens, and then escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

While the Valcins died during treatment, Williams was examined and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was admitted as a patient suffering from body trauma.

Meanwhile, the police said a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the truck and it revealed no alcohol in his breath. Nevertheless, he was taken into custody pending further investigations.
