Truck driver charged over death of Linden couple

A truck driver was yesterday charged with causing the deaths of Lloyd Valcin and Onica Valcin on Thursday last in an accident along the East Bank Highway.

50-year-old Carl Craig, of Lot 150 Public Road, Soesdyke, EBD, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court where he was released on $1,000,000 bail in relation to the two deaths. He was slapped with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and released on $500,000 for each charge. The matters were adjourned until December 15.

Craig was the driver of motor lorry #GWW4922 which was involved in  the accident on November 18, at the Caledonia Public Road, EBD. The Valcin couple succumbed after the accident, while another person, Shaquel Williams, 20, of Blue Berry Hill Squatting Area, Linden, who was a passenger in their vehicle, was injured.

The accident occurred around 14:45 hrs, according to the Guyana Police Force. The GPF said that the truck was proceeding north along the western side of Caledonia Public Road while the car with the couple and Williams was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road.

It was reported that as both vehicles were approaching a landfill site situated on the western side off the road,  an unknown truck attempted to reverse from east to west on the road into the landfill site. As a result, Craig swerved in a north easterly direction to pass the reversing truck. As a result, he ended up in the path of the Valcins’ car and they collided head-on.

The police said the Valcins and Williams suffered  injuries to their heads and about their bodies. They were all unconscious when they were removed from the car by the police and public-spirited citizens, and then escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

While the Valcins died during treatment, Williams was examined and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was admitted as a patient suffering from body trauma. Meanwhile, the police said a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the truck and it revealed no alcohol on his breath.
