Infectious disease hospital still awaiting delivery of oxygen plant

The oxygen plant that was recently procured for Guyana’s infectious disease hospital has not yet arrived.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony during his daily COVID-19 update where he acknowledged that there are some challenges as it relates to getting it here. Last month it was announced that the oxygen plant is being donated to Guyana by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) and Sewa Guyana International.

At that time it was stated that the plant which costs approximately US$150,000 had already been  sourced. During yesterday’s update it was revealed that they were experiencing some logistical difficulties in shipping it.

“So we don’t have an expected date of arrival as yet but I know they have been working on it, the people who have donated it, they have been working to get that plant to us and when it comes we will install it,” Dr Anthony said.

However, he assured that there are adequate supplies of oxygen at the Liliendaal facility which is currently being supplied by a private company here that manufactures oxygen. He noted that the facility has been retrofitted in such a way that there is access to piped oxygen at almost every bed, thereby negating the need for cylinders on the wards.
