Special constable charged with passenger’s death after Mocha crash

Aaron Rodrigues, the Special Constable who crashed into a utility pole along the Mocha Access Road on Saturday, was on Monday slapped with three charges, including causing the death of one of his passengers. 

Rodrigues, 21, of Lot 4 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown was brought before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with causing the death of Euclin Joseph, 49, of Lot 270 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown and was released on $1 million bail after he denied the charge and ordered to return to court on December 17, 2021 for his next hearing. 

He was also charged with driving without a licence and breach of insurance, to which he then pleaded guilty. He was fined $17,500 for driving without a licence and $50,000 for the breach of insurance.

According to a police release, Rodrigues was travelling at a fast rate along the Mocha Access Road, on the East Bank of Demerara when he lost control of the vehicle, on Saturday, PSS 7652, and crashed into a utility post.

At the time the now-deceased Euclin Joseph; Raymond Joseph, 39, of Lot 270, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown; Samantha Andrews, 32, of Lot 69 Ogle Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara; and Lashana Young, 32, of Lot 1748 Providence, East Bank Demerara were passengers in the vehicle. 

The injured passengers were rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where Euclin Joseph was pronounced dead while the others were admitted for medical attention. Police said a breathalyzer test conducted on the driver returned negative.
