Tuschen man charged with attempted murder of fisherman

A man who was involved in an altercation with a fisherman over a woman, has been charged with attempted murder and placed on $200,000 bail.

Gladston Saunders of Tuschen Public Road, was on Thursday arraigned at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court where Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul granted him bail on the charge. It is alleged that on November 24, at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, he attempted to murder Brian Hutchins, a fisherman of Uitvlugt Side Line Dam, West Coast Demerara.

Saunders was released on $200,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until January 18.

According to the police, at about 22:00 hrs on the date mentioned, Hutchins was walking along Church Street in Anna Catherina, when he and Saunders saw each other. It was reported that the two men had an exchange of words over Saunders’ ‘child mother’ and that Hutchins was attacked by Saunders. The police further said that the fisherman was chopped several times during the altercation.

Saunders reportedly escaped while Hutchins stopped a passing car and was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where his condition is reported to be serious after undergoing surgery.
