A 64-year-old pedal cyclist died after a collision with a motor lorry yesterday morning along the Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road.

Dead is Budhram Sookhoo called ‘Buggie’ of Grove, EBD.

The accident occurred around 11.50 am. Sookhoo was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the motor lorry, GYY 5319, who has been identified as a 32-year-old resident of Soesdyke, EBD is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a statement yesterday said enquiries disclosed that the motor lorry was proceeding south along the eastern side of the public road when the front wheel on the left side collided with the rear wheel of the pedal cycle.

At the time, Sookhoo was heading south along the eastern side of the said road in front of the motor lorry, the police said.

As a result of the collision, Sookhoo fell on the road surface and the left rear wheel ran over him.

Speaking to Stabroek News, the dead man’s sister Eulet Sookhoo said the accident occurred shortly after Budhram left home yesterday morning.

It is unclear where Budhram was heading at the time. However, Eulet said Budhram would carry out all his errands with the bicycle. “He didn’t cross the road or anything. He did just left home and we hear he get in accident and die,” the woman said.

Eulet said she last saw Budhram on Christmas Day when he attended a family gathering at her home in Herstelling, EBD.

The police said a breathalyzer test was done on the driver but no alcohol was detected.

Budhram body is presently at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
