A manhunt is underway for remanded prisoner, Kavin Singh who escaped from the Lusignan prison yesterday morning while attending virtual court.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) confirmed that the incident occurred sometime between 09.45hrs and 11.37hrs.

Singh, 18, of Lot 291 School Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara was on remand for possession of ammunition and firearm and robbery under arms. He was admitted to prison on December 6, 2021.

According to a police report, Singh was among seven inmates who were “uplifted” by prison officer Dhanraj to attend court at Lusignan Prison.

They inmates were left in custody of Prison Officer Rawlewayne Payne.

The police said enquiries revealed that around 09:45 hrs, Singh, who was foot-cuffed requested to use the washroom which is situated to the north western side of the court compound. “Per-mission was granted and Singh left and went to use the washroom,” the release said.

Prison Officer Payne then left and went to the court office leaving Singh in the washroom and upon his return he discovered Singh missing. An alarm was raised.

It is suspected that he escaped by scaling the eastern fence of the court compound. “Checks were made in the court compound and it was observed that the eastern fence of the court compound (chain link fence) was detached from the post,” the police said.

Searches were ongoing up to last night to recapture Singh. There have been many escapes from the Lusignan prison in recent years
