A Middle Road, La Penitence youth was on Friday sentenced to nine months in jail after he confessed to stealing a cellphone and money from a fellow worshipper at a Masjid.

Joshua Viera, 20, of Lot 151 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, was brought before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in a city court.

He was charged and following a confession, he was sentenced.

He admitted that on July 20, 2021, at Alexander Village, Ruimveldt, George-town, he stole a Samsung S20 cellphone, valued at $75,000 and $12,000 in cash, amounting to $87,000, which were the property of Haroon Hussain.

The Police Prosecutor told the court that Viera and Hussain attend the mosque at Alexander Village. The court heard that Hussain gave his phone to his niece to keep until he was done praying. The child reportedly placed the phone along with the cash in the kitchen area of the religious place. Viera later entered the area and picked up the articles.

The prosecutor said that Viera was previously convicted in 2021 for an offence of a similar nature. The magistrate then sentenced the youth to nine months in jail.
