Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) on Friday completed the installation of a new well in Wakenaam, Region Three.

The well was drilled and activated in Noitgedacht Village in Wakenaam and will be commissioned within a month’s time.

Residents from San Souci, Belle Plaine, Noitgedacht, and Good Success, will be the main beneficiaries of the facility.

However, according to a GWI press release, residents of Caledonia, Zeelandia, and Maria’s Pleasure, are not currently benefitting from the well due to an inefficient distribution network. As such, an action programme will be implemented to rectify the matter which will include, extensive leak repair, installation of air valves, piloting for all existing valves on the island, and service connection upgrades.

Recently, GWI’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Shaik Baksh, and a technical team visited the island to assess the performance of the well and it was found to be of high quality. As a result, the residents in the area can do away with having to pump water into their tanks.

The release further stated that given the significant improvement in the water pressure, GWI’s team is closely monitoring the distribution system for leaks. In addition, customers in areas which are receiving a good supply of water will have meters installed to reduce water loss.

In addition, a water treatment plant is currently being designed and will be constructed on the island aback the Noitgedacht Well Station, which will reduce iron content, and provide a better quality of water.

Visits were also made to Leguan to survey sites for the construction of a new water treatment plant. That plant will be the fifth one along the coast to be constructed by GWI with funding from the Caribbean Development Bank.
