Eagles in come-from-behind defeat of Castrol Strikers

Eagles overcame a one set deficit to defeat Castrol Strikers 3-1 when the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) Senior Men’s League continued on Friday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

Eight instances of tied scores highlighted the first set, as a competitive encounter ensued between the experienced units. Both teams struggled to impose their respective will, as the score was locked at 8-8, 10-10, 11-11, 16-16, 19-19, 20-20, 21-21 and 24-24.

Nevertheless, two unanswered points by Castrol Strikers sealed the hard-fought set 26-24. The second set mirrored the first, with another eight occurrences of tied scores. This transpired at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5-, 6-6-, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, and 15-15.

However, the Eagles unit pulled away at 18-15 following a 3-0 blitz. The lead was marginally extended at 21-17 after a 3-2 exchange. Eagles eventually levelled the score at 1-1, as they closed out the set 25-19 owing to a 4-2 run.

Eagles carried over their momentum into the third stanza, as they romped to a 5-1 lead. This was extended at 10-3 following a 5-2 charge. Castrol Strikers did reduce the deficit at 13-10 due to a 7-3 blitz. A 4-4 exchange failed to make inroads for their side as the score motored to 17-14.

However, an 8-2 onslaught from Eagles propelled them into the lead at 2-1 as the third set ended 25-16. The fourth set started brightly for the Eagles squad as they soared to a 5-3 advantage. Castrol Strikers responded to pull within one at 8-7 following a 4-3 exchange.

The momentum then changed hands once more as a 5-0 salvo pushed Eagles ahead at 13-7. Castrol Strikers struggled to make inroads into the deficit as 5-4 run marginally reduced the score at 17-12.

On the other hand, Eagles soared ahead at 22-13 with a 5-1 onslaught. A 3-3 salvo then sealed the set and the result for Eagles. The event will resume on Tuesday at the same venue, as Castrol Strikers lock horns with newcomer VenGuy from 19:30hrs.
