Youth awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to killing Barima farmer

A now 22-year-old man who back in 2016 had been charged as a juvenile for the murder of Barima farmer Junior Moses is now awaiting sentence after pleading to the lesser offence of manslaughter.

In accordance with the Juvenile Offenders Act, the man’s identity has to be withheld from publication since he was charged as a juvenile.

The young man had been originally indicted for murder.

At his arraignment yesterday morning, however, he denied the capital offence but accepted that on November 23, 2016, he unlawfully killed Moses at Ela Landing, Barima, North West District.

Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall has deferred sentencing until March 29 in order for a probation report to be done.

The offender was represented by defence attorney Jerome Khan; while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Lisa Cave.

The matter was called before the Demerara High Court.

Police reports had stated that the then-teen and Moses were allegedly consuming alcohol when an argument ensued between them.

During that time, the defendant is said to have armed himself with a knife and stabbed the victim once, before making good his escape.

Moses was taken to the Mabaruma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
