A man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl was yesterday acquitted.

Following hours of deliberations, a jury yesterday afternoon unanimously found Wendson Thomas, called ‘Dollius,’ not guilty on the charge of raping the child between March 1 and March 31, 2019, in the County of Essequibo.

In a majority verdict of 10 to 2, the panel then also found the now 25-year-old Thomas not guilty of engaging in sexual activity with the child by kissing her lips.

Following the announcement of the verdicts, Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who presided over the trial at the Georgetown Sexual Offences Court, informed the expressionless Thomas that he was free to go.

The man was represented by defence attorney Madan Kissoon, while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Nafeeza Baig.
