A Tucville man died on Wednesday night after he struck by a car while riding along Mandela Avenue, in Georgetown.

Dead is Lyndon Austin, 57, of Go Slow Drive, Tucville, Georgetown.

According to a Guyana Police Force (GPF) press release, the accident occurred around 10:30 pm as Austin was proceeding north along the western side of the western carriageway on his cycle on Mandela Avenue, and the driver of the car, identified as Asif Mohammed, 32, was proceeding north allong the centre of the western carriageway of the road.

The police said it is alleged that Austin, in the vicinity of Rubis Gas Station, was crossing the western carriageway, going from the west to east, and in the process he ended up into the path of the car, which could not avoid hitting him.

Due to the impact, Austin was thrown onto the bonnet and windscreen of the car and then fell to the road.

The man was then picked up by the driver of the car and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was seen and examined by a doctor and was treated for abrasions about his body and along with head injuries.

Austin, who did not regain consciousness, succumbed at about 23:30 hrs to his injuries while receiving further medical attention.

The police said a notice of intended prosecution has since been served on the driver, who remains in custody and is assisting with investigations. The police said breathalyser tests showed that his breath alcohol content was .044 and .043, which is above the legal limit.
