Star Sports provides substantial support to cricket gear project

Popular sports store, Star Sports Trophies and Awards of 28 Logwood, Enmore, East Coast, Demerara recently donated more cricket gear towards the “cricket gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana” project.

At a simple handing over ceremony, former senior national wicketkeeper\batsman and owner of Star Sports, Sheikh Mohamed, handed over a number of bats, batting gloves, junior cricket balls, wickets, cricket bags, keeping pads and gloves, cricket shoes and clothing with a value of approximately $600,000.

This follows an earlier donation of gear towards the project. The sports store is the agent for authentic major cricket brands around the world and provides the highest quality of gear and other sports equipment.

In presenting the gear to Anil Beharry, a partner in this initiative along with Kishan Das of the USA, Mohamed stated that he is impressed with the level of accountability and the reach of this venture. He said that he is happy that young players from all three counties of Guyana are benefiting, thus this additional contribution.

Beharry, a current executive of the Guyana Cricket Board expressed gratitude for the gear and committed to help as many young cricketers as possible in Guyana. He is hopeful that a new breed of young players will come through the system, making Guyana and West Indies cricket strong again. He alluded to the fact that sports in general helps to keep our young people off the streets and is an avenue to a better life.

Meanwhile, young and promising fast bowlers Quincy Alder and Winston Joseph were the latest to benefit. Alder plays for Paradise Cricket Club and Joseph, for Belladrum Cricket Club, both located on West Berbice. They received one pair of cricket shoe each. Historically, the area is known to produce fast bowlers for Guyana including recently Keon Joseph and Raun Johnson.

So far, the items collected include $130,000 cash, two trophies, 11 cricket boots, 15 pairs of batting pads, 15 bats, nine pairs of batting gloves, 18 thigh pads, one wicket-keeping pad, one arm guard and four cricket bags. In addition to the above, $600,000 worth in gear.

To date, 32 young players from all three counties of Guyana have already benefited.

The mission of the duo is to see cricket related items, used or new, distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills, discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent spotting is done across the country and club leaders will also assist to identify talent.
