Berbice sugar estates surpass 50% of 1st crop target

The Berbice estates of the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuCo) have surpassed 50% of their 2022 1st Crop sugar production target at the half way point in the crop.

A release yesterday from GuySuCo said that as at March 31, 2022, the Berbice sugar estates produced 54% of their aggregate sugar targets. The Albion and Blairmont estates have produced 5,407 and 4,447 metric tonnes respectively. Uitvlugt Estate on the West Demerara, (currently out of grinding operations for over four weeks as a result of a mechanical failure), made 66 metric tonnes in the limited grinding time.

According to Vijay Gobardhan, GuySuCo’s Factory Operations Director (ag), sugar output has been severely affected at Uitvlugt Estate. This situation, he said, is as a result of the failure of the #1 Mill Turbine’s Reduction Gear Box; a key piece of machinery essential to the factory’s grinding operations.

Gobardhan said that repair works on the damaged gearbox are on-going. Fabrication was completed on Saturday and the machining aspects of the repairs are currently in progress. It is anticipated that the testing phase of the repaired gear box will begin by Friday, April 8, 2022.
