Heavyweights lock horns in GCA first-division opener

Georgetown will be buzzing with high-profile clashes in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) GISE/Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall, two-day first-division opening round this weekend.

At Police, the hosts will take on the challenge from reigning champions, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) as national players look to make their points.

DCC is expected to feature big name stars such as Christopher Barnwell, Trevon `Bugsy’ Griffith, Tevin Imlach, Steven Sankar, Sachin Singh, Raymond Perez, Ashmead Nedd, Totaram Bishun and Raj Nanan while Police will have at their disposal, Antony Adams, Kemol Savory, Ronsford Beaton, Kevlon Anderson, Kevon Boodie, Quinten Sampson, Pernell London, Eon Rodrigues, Jason Heyliger and Kelvin Leitch.

Over at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) will have their hands full with the Leon Johnson-led hosts. Johnson’s team, which finished second in the last tournament, is expected to feature the likes of Vishaul Singh, Ronaldo Alimohamed, Mavindra Dindyal, Winston Forrester, Martin Pestano-Belle, Devon Lord and Bernard Bailey. Malteenoes will, however, be up to the challenge with the likes of Steven Jacobs, Stephon Browne, Shaquille Williams, Nichosie Barker and company in the mix.

Meanwhile, with schools closed across the country, GCA’s youth fixtures are also set for the upcoming week in the Ramchand Auto Spares/Survival Group of Companies/Trophy Stall Under-19 50-over tournament.

Today will see GT XI battling GNIC at Queen’s College (QC) and Bel Air Rubis taking on Agricola at DCC while tomorrow, DCC will host 4R Lions, QC will host Bel Air Rubis and Transport Sports Club will head over to Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) to take on the home side.

On Wednesday, Transport and Everest Cricket Club will go head-to-head at QC, GCC and DCC will face off at GCC, MYO and Agricola will lock horns at MYO and GT XI will go toe-to-toe with Malteenoes at QC.

Also on the cards, New York Tri-State under-15 will face GCA Under-17 in two 50-over matches on Tuesday and Thursday at GCC and DCC respectively. The two sides will then face each other in a two-day match at DCC over the following weekend (April 16 and 17).
