KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, CMC – The Windward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 women’s teams will face each other in a series of five T20 matches here, starting today.

The April 14-19 tour, the first bilateral Women’s Under-19 tour between the two territories, forms part of both territories’ preparations for the upcoming West Indies Women Under 19 competition in July.

Miles Bascombe

Windward Islands Cricket Board (WICB) Technical Director Miles Bascombe said Windwards Cricket’s continued emphasis on female cricket aligns with Trinidad and Tobago, hence the enthusiasm for this tour.

“I am sure there will be immense learning opportunities for these young players,” he said.

To commemorate the occasion and in anticipation of an ongoing collaboration between the Trinidad and Tobago Women Cricket Association (TTWCA) and the WICB, the teams will play for the Browne-John/McIntyre Trophy, named after Trinidadian Ann Browne-John and late Grenadian Nadica McIntyre, two advocates and contributors to the development of West Indies women’s cricket.

Until her passing in 2017, McIntyre was a champion and administrator of women’s cricket. She represented Grenada at the regional level in both cricket and netball.

Browne-John, a former West Indies player who is now Lead Selector for West Indies Women, said she was “pretty humbled by this initiative of WICB and quite honoured to be recognized in this way, particularly with Nadica, who was a stalwart for Women’s cricket”.

WICB President Dr. Kishore Shallow said the recognition of Browne-John and McIntryre was very deserving.

“Women cricket in the West Indies has survived and advanced through the incalculable efforts of persons like Ann and Nadica. These two distinguished ladies have been stalwarts of Women’s cricket in the region. Unreservedly, the recognition is truly deserving and monumental,” he said.
