April 23rd WBC Championship Boxing Event recognizes Guyana’s Armed Forces

As one of the greatest boxing events in Guyana’s history draws closer, the boxing board’s President, Peter Abdool and local promoter Aleem Hussain paid a courtesy call to the Chief of Staff Brigadier Bess to thank the armed forces for their service to the country and donated a large quantity of complimentary tickets.

The mega event, a WBC double International Championship dubbed ‘Road to Redemption’ will box off on April 23 at the National Stadium and will star Elton Dharry in the headliner and Dexter Marques in the co-feature.

Brigadier Bess expressed his gratitude for the gesture and committed to working with ranks to ensure continuity in the performance of the boxing gym. He stated that members of the gym will work with youth interested in the sport as a way to ensure that they occupy themselves meaningfully. Abdool was high in praise of the Guyana Defence Force Boxing gym and its performance and their critical contribution of the GDF gym to local amateur boxing.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport ensured that the event had the biggest stage by allowing the action to take place inside the Providence National Stadium, usually the home of CPL and the Guyana Amazon Warriors team cricket, underlining the significance and importance of this return of world championship boxing to Guyana.

Meanwhile, according to Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle, “The Ministry will be distributing 1,000 tickets to young persons and I believe that this is a key step towards rejuvenating the amateur ranks in boxing as it gives youngsters a chance to see boxing in the grandest setting.”

Tickets are on sale at all Assuria General Insurance offices nationwide, Giftland Mall, Amazonia Mall, Movietowne, The Locals Restaurant in Vreed-en-Hoop and Fagoo’s General Store in Parika.
