Residents of Region Three (Essequibo Islands–West Demerara) and sections of Georgetown yesterday experienced a power cut after a minibus crashed into a utility pole at the corner of Sandy Babb Street and Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.

In a public advisory posted on its Facebook page yesterday, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said as a result of the accident, several feeders tripped.

“At approximately 02.25hrs yesterday, a vehicle slammed into one of the company’s recently erected concrete poles at Sandy Babb Street and Vlissengen Road casing several feeders to trip which disrupted service to customers in Region 3 and sections of Georgetown,” the advisory said.

Following its intervention, GPL said that power was subsequently restored to most of the affected areas. However, there was a power outage in the areas located in close proximity to where the accident occurred.

“Following an inspection of the concrete pole, our teams have isolated a section of the network to conduct remedial work,” the advisory added.

Power was restored to all areas by yesterday afternoon.

No serious injury was reported.

GPL is advising commuters to exercise caution when using the road especially during the inclement weather season.

“Once again, GPL implores road users to exercise extreme caution, especially during inclement weather conditions. Accidents of this nature cause unnecessary service disruptions to thousands of customers,” the company urged.
