It was déjà vu all over again in Essequibo yesterday as Team Foundation riders, Akil Campbell and Jamual John once again occupied the top two podium spots.

One week after earning the gold and silver in the Independence Three-Stage road race, the duo took their talents to the Cinderella County and mirrored their heroics in yesterday’s 60-mile event which was also sponsored by the National Sports Commission.

Campbell of Trinidad, soloed in to take the spoils of the fixture which was staged from Charity to Supenaam and back to Anna Regina in excess of four minutes ahead of the pack. It was also the same margin of victory in the Three-Stage race.

Team Foundation standouts, Akil Campbell and Jamual John once again occupied the top two podium spots yesterday in Essequibo.

Despite the heavy wind and rain, the Trinidadian national champion and Pan Am Games gold medalist triumphed in a blazing 2:18.23. His teammate John, outsprinted the peloton to claim silver while Team Evolution’s duo of Paul DeNobrega and Curtis Dey placed third and fourth.

The fifth place trophy went to Kemuel Moses while Robin Persaud filled out the top six positions of the event which attracted the cream of the nation’s wheelsmen. Persaud led all Under 50 veteran riders with Paul Choowenam and Walter Grant-Stuart placing second and third in that category. Talim Shaw, Ian Jackson and Gary Benjamin were the top three riders in the Over-50 category.

Meanwhile, Mario Washington was the first junior cyclist to cross the line, leading Alex Leung and Adjani Cutting. Clavecia Spencer was the lone female cyclist that competed.

The cycling season is scheduled to continue on Sunday in Berbice. Campbell and John will no doubt be aiming to climb the top two podium steps again.
