Meusa, Johnson unbeaten in chess championship after four rounds

Candidate Master Wendell Meusa and Nellisha Johnson sport undefeated records after four rounds in the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) ‘National Open and Women’s Championship’ respectively.

This was disclosed in a  release from the GCF. The tournament commenced on Saturday, May 21st at the National Stadium, Providence. It is slated to conclude on Sunday, May 29th.

In the National Open Championship, Meusa has defeated Rai Sharma, Godfrey Taylor, defending champion Candidate Master Taffin Khan and Fide Master Anthony Drayton to date to sit on four points.

Loris Nathoo and Frankie Farley are second on three points each, while Ethan Lee and Khan sit on 2.5 points apiece. Drayton and Roberto Neto are currently positioned on two points each. The other participant is Errol Tiwari.

In the Women’s Championship, Johnson has brushed aside Adia Alphonso, Maliha Rajkumar, sibling Waveney Johnson, and Angel Rahim to tally four points. On three points are Pooja Lam and defending women’s champion Sasha Shariff.

“At the conclusion of the National Tournaments, along with its point-based system of calculation from its Grand Prix Tournaments, the GCF will determine the members of its 10-member Olympiad Team destined for Chennai, India in July/August 2022 to participate in the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad”, the release stated.

The Open Championship is being sponsored by Gaico Construction while KFC Guyana is the sponsor of the Women’s Tournament.
