Demerara beat E’bo by nine wickets in female U-19 opener

Demerara opened the Guyana Cricket Board female under-19 inter-county tournament with a nine-wicket win over Essequibo yesterday at Everest Cricket Club.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Essequibo were contained to 98 for six after their 20-over allotment before Demerara raced to 99 for one in 14.3 overs.

Demerara captain, Naomi Barkoye bagged 3-6 with the ball and reduced the Cinderella County ladies to 3-9 in the third over.

Areah Ally continued to apply pressure and removed Fanelia Narine (2) and Kayla Narine (4) to end with 2-22.

Antel Jocobis was the only batter to reach double figures with 12 from 66 balls. Extras however complimented Essequibo’s total with a whopping contribution of 66.

Barkoye returned with bat in had to hit three boundaries during her unbeaten knock of 28 from 54 balls. She added 26 for the first wicket with Aneesa Chetram who was run out for four and an unfinished 73-run partnership with Melanie Dover who made 12 not out from 38 balls. Essequibo leaked 55 extras, 41 of which came in wides.

The competition continues today with Berbice facing Demerara at the same venue.
