Three held on West Demerara over ganja, attempt to pervert justice

The police yesterday arrested three person on the West Demerara over ganja and an attempt to pervert the course of justice.

In a statement last night, the police said that around 1 pm yesterday, acting on information received, ranks headed by a cadet officer went to the  Wales Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD), where they observed Nicholas Osborne sitting on a bicycle in the vicinity of the Wales Police Station.

As the ranks continued to observe, the statement said that they saw motor car PAB 228 which was at the time being driven by Davanand Rambarran pull up alongside Osborne. He handed Osborne a black bulky plastic bag and then drove off.

Osborne kept possession of the bulky plastic bag and rode off on his bicycle in the direction of the police ranks. He was pursued by the ranks and apprehended along with the black bulky plastic bag.

The bag was opened in his presence by a Police rank and  a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found.

Police then carried out a search on Osborne and an object which appeared to be a firearm was seen. He was escorted along with the suspected cannabis and the suspected firearm to Wales Police Station.

The ranks then went to the home of Ramcharran of Vriesland, WBD, where he was told of the offence.

At the station, the suspected cannabis was weighed by the police, in the presence of Ramcharran and Osborne and it amounted to 481 grams.

Later in the afternoon, Seeranie Rameshwar of Schoonord, West Bank Demerara, went to the Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where she contacted a Police rank, in the presence of another rank, and told him that she will give him $300,000 cash to have the matter against her brother, Rambarran, withdrawn.

The rank then informed the Cadet Officer of Rameshwar’s intention and she went into the Criminal Investigation Department at Parfaite Harmonie Police Station and when she handed over the sum of money to the rank, she was arrested by a female rank.

She was told of the offence, cautioned and placed into custody. The sum of money was counted in her presence and it amounted to $280,000.

The suspects are expected to be charged soon.
