An accident waiting to happen on Sheriff St

Dear Editor,

A video was recently circulating on Facebook where a cyclist was bullied out of the cycle lane by a canter truck and then by a car that was pushing its way on to the main road. As someone who uses this road on a daily basis, I can attest that what was portrayed in that video is an everyday occurrence. It seems only a matter of time before there is a fatality. At every possible location along this road you will find multiple vehicles breaking the law and driving in a very irresponsible manner. Not once have I seen the police do an enforcement campaign to bring law and order to this road.

The government invested billions to upgrade this road. They also implemented new features which should bring comfort and safety to cyclists as well as drivers. However, none of this comfort is being benefited from by the cyclists but rather as a lane for all sorts of dangerous driving. Isn’t this road equipped with cameras? Can’t the lawbreakers be identified and brought to justice? Can’t the police have frequent patrols until the road users start adhering to the laws? As it is at present, the situation is an accident waiting to happen (if it hasn’t already happened).

Our police need to stop being reactive and be more proactive. Let’s use this road as it was intended to be used. And this is not only for Sheriff Street but for almost all of the roads in the country. Wrong has been occurring for so long that many think that it is now right. That needs to change ASAP.

Sincerely,

M. Abraham
