Cuban coach Roldan returns to prepare Commonwealth Games team

Cuban boxing coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan, returned to Guyana yesterday for his third stint.

He will be tasked with preparing the country’s top pugilists for the Commonwealth Games and also the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Tournament.

This is according to President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle.

Roldan, who left Guyana after a three-year tenure in 2015 and returned in 2019 in an effort to clinch Tokyo 2020 Olympic berths for the local pugilists, has returned to primarily assist in preparing Keevin Allicock (Featherweight), Desmond Amsterdam (Middleweight) and Colin Lewis (Welterweight).

The standout boxing trio is set to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the quadrennial event which will commence on July 28 in Birmingham, England and conclude on August 8.

Ninvalle said that Roldan’s work programme will take effect almost immediately as a meeting with the Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole has already been scheduled.

Ninvalle added that with Roldan’s expertise, the talents of the young familiar boxers can be fast tracked.

“Mr. Roldan has done a lot with us over the years since he was first here. He is no stranger to us and we expect him to bring a lot, he has a lot to offer boxing in Guyana and we trust that this time we will exploit his talents to its fullest.”

Roldan, 53, expressed gratitude to the GBA for making his return possible. He promised to “work very hard” and give his “best to the boxers.”

During Roldan’s  previous stints, he was responsible for overseeing pugilists that represented the Golden Arrowhead at the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, the South American Youth Games, the Pan Am Qualifiers, the Olympics and Goodwill Tournaments.
