Surinamese businessman loses cash, other valuables after vehicle broken into near Umana Yana

More than $300,000 in cash and other valuables were stolen on Thursday night from a vehicle belonging to a visiting Surinamese businessman.

Police yesterday confirmed the break in and theft which took place sometime between 21.00 hrs and 23.00 hrs on High Street, Georgetown, in the vicinity of Umana Yana, Georgetown.

The victim was identified as Rakesh Kalloe, 53, of Paramaribo, Suriname.

The items stolen include a leather bag containing US$800, a wallet, a laptop, a bottle of whiskey and important documents. The items were estimated to have a total value of $359,000.

They were in the back seat of Kalloe’s vehicle.

Kalloe and one of his friends, who is also a Surinamese businessman, are visiting Guyana to conduct business and they have been moving around in the vehicle belonging to Kalloe.

According to a police report, enquiries disclosed that on Thursday night Kalloe parked his vehicle on High Street and he and his friend went to dine at the Pegasus Hotel.

When they were finished, they returned to the vehicle and observed that the back window glass was broken.

Upon checking they discovered that the cash and other valuables were missing.

The police were contacted and an investigation has been launched.
