Fire wrecks Linden house

A MacKenzie, Linden home was wrecked by fire on Monday.

According to a Guyana Police Force (GPF) press release, the fire occurred at about 7:45 am at Lot 451 Moraballi Street, MacKenzie, Linden.

The Linden Fire Service responded with a water tender and water boozer, which immediately went into action and extinguished the fire under the command of Station Officer Springer.

The fire destroyed the interior of the upper flat of the two-storey wooden and concrete structure.

According to Springer, the origin of the fire is unknown and investigations are ongoing.

However, the GPF said its enquiries disclosed that Joyann Semple, a 36-year-old security guard who resides at the property with her common-law husband, 61-year-old Malcolm Archer, a labourer, who would usually light incense around the house.

The release said Semple warned him repeatedly about the unsafe practice because of his forgetfulness. According to the release, at about 5:31 am on Monday, Archer lit an incense stick and stuck same on a wall inside the eastern bedroom and traveled to Georgetown. At 6:30 am, Semple secured her home and went to work, unaware that her husband had lit the incense stick in the house.
