Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn on Friday handed over 1,000 certificates of birth, marriage, and death to toshaos of the various Amerindian villages who were attending the National Toshaos’ Council Conference in Georgetown.

The General Register Office (GRO), which is an agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has processed over 1,000 applications for certificates at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where the conference was being hosted.

In a press release, the ministry said the GRO had received over 3,000 applications for birth, marriage, and death certificates. In addition, over 2,000 late registrations were also accepted.

Deputy Registrar General of the GRO Visham Budhoo explained that during the outreach at the ACCC, for every birth certificate application received, a search was conducted on the spot which determined if the applicant was registered. Once an entry was found, the application was processed and the certificate was issued to the applicant or given to the toshao of the respective village for disbursement.

For several months now, persons, especially parents of newborns, have been complaining about the long wait for birth certificates.
