Guyana continuing to monitor for Monkey Pox

With Monkey Pox being detected in some CARICOM countries, Guyana continues to monitor for any outbreak by providing the necessary training for medical officials.

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, yesterday said that advisories were sent to doctors on symptoms and how to treat any case recorded in the country.

“Yeah, we have been monitoring for Monkey Pox and the Chief Medical Officer would have issued an internal memo to all doctors defining what they should look for and explaining to them what are the steps they needed to take. So we have sent out this advisory to our doctors probably for more than a month now and we keep checking and monitoring.” Anthony said that training was provided to two medical personnel.

“While we have done that, sent out advisories, trying to educate people pertaining to Monkey Pox, we also spent some time training our medical personnel, so we have sent two persons from the National Public Health Reference Lab for training, one person went to Jamaica and they’re now trained in using PCR to detect the Monkey Pox virus…we have another person who is currently in training in Brazil”, he said.

The disease which was recently detected in Jamaica and Barbados usually comes with symptoms of a rash and bumps on the skin.
