Sophia taxi driver remanded over ammo

Twenty-eight-year-old Nigel Clarke, a taxi driver of ‘C’ Field Sophia, Squatting Area, Georgetown, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where the charge of being in possession of ammunition when he was not the holder of a firearm licence was read to him.

It is alleged that on July 15th, at North Ruimveldt, Clarke had in his possession one live .32 round. Clarke pleaded not guilty to the charge and bail was refused and he was placed on remand until July 28th, 2022.

According to the Prosecution, Clarke was approached by a Police Officer on mobile patrol duty, who requested that a search be carried out on the defendant’s motorcar during which the ammunition was found. However, Attorney-at-Law Sherod Duncan, representing Clarke, argued for his client’s innocence, stating that no gun was found in the vehicle and so the ammunition could not be Clarke’s.

The attorney went on to say that multiple persons would have been occupying the vehicle, hence, the reason why the ammunition was discovered in the back seat. Additionally, through his lawyer, Clarke said that he was at a cook shop and not in the car when the police had approached him. But that claim was rebutted by the Prosecutor, who contended that the accused was sitting in the vehicle at the time.
