East Ruimveldt man charged with armed robbery

An East Ruimveldt man has been remanded to prison after he was charged with armed robbery.

Ackeem Boyce, 22, of Lot 448 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme was on Wednesday arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who read the charge to him.

The charge against the man states that on June 13, 2022, at Charles Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, whilst being in the company of others and armed with a dangerous weapon, that is to say a gun, he robbed Roston Barker of one motorcycle valued at $211,000, a SA Samsung cellular phone valued $38,000 and a wallet worth $1,500and which contained at the time $4,200 in cash.

Boyce pleaded not guilty to the charge but bail was however denied. He will make his next court appearance on July 26th, 2022.

According to the facts heard in court, after the robbery, the defendant was seen and was subsequently trailed by the police and was intercepted on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

However, when he saw the police, it is alleged that he fired a few rounds towards them, resulting in the police exchanging fire with him at which point he entered a burgundy car.

The ranks then managed to apprehend the suspect where they informed him of an alleged robbery committed on Barker.

It was said that the ranks also carried out a search on Boyce and the virtual complainant’s wallet was found in the left side pants pocket of the accused.

As such, the man was arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station where he was positively identified by Barker.

Meanwhile, Boyce claimed that he did not open fire on the police and that they were the ones who shot him in his back.

The police prosecutor also informed that the defendant was taken for medical attention on the same day of the incident.
