Petra Organization prepares for U-14 Football Championship

The Petra Organization yesterday conducted a team briefing for participating schools in the ExxonMobil U-14 Football Championship at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

The tournament structure and fixtures were discussed with the participants at the forum, whilst two balls were also presented to the teams to aid in their preparation for the prestigious championship.

Co-Director of the Petra Organization, Marlan Cole, disclosed that the fixtures are being adjusted to accommodate the possibility of other teams in the tournament, adding that the tournament sponsors are enthusiastic to execute the respective projects for the resulting top four finishers.

Meanwhile, Ryan Hoppie, ExxonMobil Community Relations Advisor, said that the company is pleased to partner with the Petra Organization once more, adding that the participation of teachers and parents is intrinsically important to the event, and its continued success.

The event which will feature a Boy’s and Girl’s component and starts tomorrow, utilising an initial round-robin format. The Boy’s division will feature 24 schools, with teams divided into six groups of four. The eight-team Girl’s section will feature two groups of four.

Upon the conclusion of the group stage, 16 teams will advance to the knockout round from the Boys pool. The teams will then play for positions 1-16. Similarly, the female section will contest for positions 1-8.

The competing teams are Ann’s Grove, Charlestown, Cummings Lodge, Dolphin, East Ruimveldt, Freeburg, Golden Grove, Houston, Kingston, L’Aventure, Leonora, Lodge, Marian Academy, New Campbellville, New Central, North Ruimveldt, Patentia, Plaisance, St Cuthbert’s, St Winifred’s, Tucville, Tutorial, West Demerara, and West Ruimveldt.

The top four finishers from each division will walk away with $300,000, $150,000, $75,000, and $40,000 correspondingly towards a project within the respective institutions. The total sponsorship of the tournament comes in at $6 million.
