A new $3.5 million laundry facility, PK’s Super Clean Laundromat, was yesterday launched on the ground floor of Akbar’s Mini Mall in Cornelia Ida on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD).

The laundromat, which is the first of its kind for Region Three, will offer the washing and drying of any clothing, curtains, mats and any other upholstery fabrics. Other services available are steam-cleaning, pressing and folding.

Speaking with Sunday Stabroek yesterday, the owner, 53-year-old Parbattie Kanhai, said that her business was a dream that she had for years.

“It was a dream I had when I went overseas to New York for vacation in 2017, and I would’ve visited the laundromats there and I became fascinated and I know that there is no business like that in Region Three so I decided to work towards opening one here.”

Kanhai had originally opted to wait until she retired from her teaching profession to open the business, but however, an opportunity came by where she was given an area to conduct the laundromat and as such she immediately held onto it.

“I was waiting until retirement to start working towards it so that I could open it then, but I eventually acquired a spot that I would say is lucrative…so when I received the opportunity for the spot I grabbed it and used my savings to work towards it and open it here.”

Although the business has not yet been fully completed, the mother of three disclosed that she has spent $3.5 million thus far and hopes to expand it as she gains more clients.

In addition, the woman, who has been teaching for thirty five years, said that her business is mostly targeted towards the working population and also for other persons who would like to take advantage of the services that are being offered.

“I hope to fulfill the needs and provide the services to the people in Region three, I also hope that the word gets out there and that it would encourage people to come because it is the very first one in the Region…as a mom and working, sometimes when you go home on Fridays and Saturdays, you just wanna rest and then you see all your laundry looking at you so I’m hoping to catch the working population too.”

Present at the launching was Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, who encouraged the family to continue to pursue their entrepreneurial skills and make their now newly launched business a success.
