A construction worker was yesterday remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to the charge of robbery under arms.

Twenty-four-year-old Ryan Pompey of Lot 136 Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court who read the charge to him. It is alleged that Pompey, on August 2nd at North Road, Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, robbed Shane Paul of $45,000. Pompey will return to court on August 15th.

The defendant claimed that he was heading to the Georgetown Public Hospital to uplift treatment for a cut that he sustained on the right side of his abdomen, and at the hospital’s gate, he was apprehended by a security guard on the accusation of robbery. However, the prosecutor rebutted Pompey’s claim while objecting to bail due to the seriousness of the offence and due to Pompey being positively identified by the virtual complainant. The prosecutor also said that the virtual complainant was beaten during the robbery.
