Two families united over the weekend through the marriage of a young couple were plunged into mourning yesterday afternoon after the groom, an overseas-based Guyanese, lost his life in an accident along the Bath, West Coast Berbice Public Road.

Beeshan Dhoray, also known as ‘Lako,’ 23, of Queens, New York and his new wife, Viroshni Persaud, also known as ‘Roshni’, 19, of Lot 88 Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, who wedded according to Hindu rights over the weekend, left their Canje home yesterday morning to head to the GPOC building in Georgetown to sign documents to make their union legal.

According to relatives, Persaud’s cousin, Novashkar Sahadeo, 26, an overseas-based Guyanese, rented a car, PTT 7600, and drove the couple along with another relative, Romona Romatalli, 33, of Lot 155 Susannah Village, to Georgetown for the signing.

The car the couple were in when the fatal collision occurred

Around 16:00 hrs, as they were travelling along the Bath Public Road on their way back, Sahadeo attempted to overtake a hire car and collided with the front of the car and lost control of his vehicle.

According to the police, William Darenne, 57, was driving HC 7356, proceeding east along the northern side of the road when Sahadeo, who was proceeding in the same direction, attempted to overtake the hire car which was in the process of turning south across the road.

However, it was then that Sahadeo collided with the right side of the front bumper of the hire car, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which spun several times before slamming into a nearby utility pole and concrete fence and coming to a stop on a resident’s parapet.

Stabroek News was told that Sahadeo and the three occupants were rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where Dhoray was pronounced dead on arrival. Persaud was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where her condition was listed last evening as serious but stable.

Sahadeo, who was also transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, suffered a fractured shoulder, Stabroek News was told, while Romatalli was treated at the Fort Wellington Hospital for minor injuries.

Last evening, relatives were left in a state of shock and confusion after they confirmed the news of the accident and Dhoray’s death.

A cousin of the deceased explained that the families were still trying to ascertain details of the crash as of last evening.

Relatives and friends gathered at the couple’s house and at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital were all extremely emotional as they could not believe what had happened.

A cousin of Persaud while crying said that the young couple was extremely happy and excited to get married. She said over the weekend there was so much love and happiness throughout their home, which is now filled with sadness.

She noted, that she got an opportunity to meet Persaud at the hospital, where she kept asking for her husband.

Dhoray was described as a hardworking and kind person.
