Viroshni Persaud, also known as ‘Roshni’, 19, the young bride who was left widowed after Tuesday’s collision at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, remains in a stable condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Her father, Gobin Persaud told Stabroek News that his daughter’s condition was stable and that she was “doing okay.”

Her late husband, Beeshan Dhoray, also known as ‘Lako’, 23, of Queens, New York and Persaud, of Lot 88 Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice, who wedded according to Hindu rights on Sunday, left their Canje home Tuesday morning to head to Georgetown to sign their marriage certificate.

Novashkar Sahadeo, 26, an overseas based Guyanese cousin of the bride, rented a car, PTT 7600, and drove the couple along with another relative, Romona Romatalli, 33, of Lot 155 Susannah Village, to Georgetown for the signing.

However, while returning around 16:00 hrs along the Bath Public Road on Tuesday, Sahadeo while attempting to overtake the hire car collided with the front of the car and lost control of the vehicle he was operating.

Commander of Region Five Kurleigh Simon yesterday told Stabroek News that the driver of the hire car, William Darenne, 57, remains in police custody, while Sahadeo, remains hospitalised in a stable condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Darenne, 57, who was driving HC 7356, was proceeding east along the northern side of the road when Sahadeo attempted to overtake him as he was in the process of turning south across the road.

It was then that Sahadeo collided with the side of the front bumper of the hire car, causing him to lose control, resulting in the car he was driving spinning several times before slamming into a nearby utility pole and concrete fence before coming to halt on a resident’s parapet.

The four were rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where Dhoray was pronounced dead on arrival. Persaud and Sahadeo were transferred Tuesday afternoon to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and Romatalli was treated at Fort Wellington for minor injuries.
