The Georgetown Football Club (GFC) was founded by Scottish national, Alexander Russell, in December 1902. The Scotsman who arrived in British Guiana in 1889, was the club’s first president. A popular tournament, the Russell Memorial Cup, was played annually in his honour.

Today, Stabroek Sport salutes the men that had the honour of leading this prestigious organisation in its early stages.

The first captains were A.K. Farquhar and E. Becket in 1902. J.W. Duncan and O. A. Southerland were at the helm in 1903. These were followed by P.F. Smith (1904), W.D. Slater (1906), W.D. Dierden (1908), and E.R. Doon and B.G. Seedorf (1909).  Subsequently, A.G. King secured the captaincy in 1910, while G. Gibson and C.K. Osborne were at the helm in 1911. Afterwards, H.A. Assinder and P.W. King were the leaders in 1912, followed by A.B. MacLarane and J.C. Brummell in 1913.

The year of the Great War, 1914, saw H.S. Barnes as captain. A.G. King resumed as captain in 1915. He then shared the leadership post with A.S. Gilbert in 1916.

The first team that played a championship match for the club against Artillery in 1902 comprised C.J. Meggs, E.R. Doon, A.K. Farquhar (Captain), G.D. Sanderson, G.A. Southerland, E. Beckett, N. Warren, P. Smith, J. F Hill, and J. Duncan.
